About me

I graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art with an Honours degree in Illustration and Printmaking in 1993.

Since graduating I have run my own small design business, covered Scotland as territory manager for various design led gift companies, had a family and finally the chance arose to get back to my creative roots. The West Harris Trust advertised studio spaces in their new community centre (tallanamara) on the west coast of Harris and thinking about the possibilities I applied for one.

After sending in a portfolio and having a telephone interview I was lucky enough to be offered a space and so Joceline HIldrey Illustration was started.

Having been inspired by the Outer Hebrides over many years of family holidays I knew my creativity would be re-ignited and so took the plunge and moved to Harris with my son and partner in November 2016.

I work mainly in watercolour, pen and ink and enjoy some mixed media on found driftwood. The details of life in the Hebrides inspire me and I love capturing the essence of the place with corrugated iron roofs, boats, fishing paraphernalia, wildlife (especially birds), fences tied up with baler twine etc. It’s the detail I find fascinating.

My homewares range has been designed with the abundance of coastal and wader birds found here in the Hebrides and consists of melamine placemats, coasters, porcelain mugs and travel mugs. There are six bird designs in the range and a wee extra fun mackerel design. The range will be added to over the coming year with more designs and I hope to increase the variety of product on offer too.

They are complemented by a range of greetings cards (blank), bookmarks, notebooks and calendars. Most of these designs are details from my original artwork.

A growing part of my business is creating bespoke commissions for clients whether it be a favourite view framed for a wedding gift, a logo for a new self-catering venture or a driftwood name sign painted and varnished for a boat. I am always happy to discuss individual ideas and requirements with a client.
